Dear Coach
The most successful athletic coaches in the world are the ones who are on a constant quest for a better way to do what they do. This is the case for us here at PAC training. I want to show you everything I have found in the world of preparation.
Steve Backley
Upon retiring from 20 years in international sport, I was faced with the prospect of finding an adequate replacement for all the excitement and focus that getting ready for an Olympics requires.
My passion has always been for detail in preparation. This would be where I would focus my attention
I knew that I had seen loads of great exercises being practiced by champions from all over the world. I also knew that I needed to have a hip replacement and that my days were possibly numbered in terms of demonstrating the exercises well.
So firstly I wanted a permanent record of these exercises for myself. I went through all of my old training diaries and consulted my career long strength and conditioning advisor Calvin Morriss.
I ended up recording 517 videos and have since recorded hundreds more that will go onto the site over the next year.
Here are a couple that you may have never seen before.
Exercise Video 1
Dropping barbell catch and return
Exercise Video 2
Single leg romanian dead lift
After creating these videos I felt a surge of relief, however I was unsure of what to do with them. I knew I'd created a valuable archive which was a timeline of my entire career. The combination of the video demonstrations and the reasoning behind each exercise could really help any sports person improve their performance.
I reflected back over the wealth of knowledge I had accumulated over the years. I had been like a sponge always looking to find the extra edge that could make the difference between winning and losing.
I've trained under the leading Eastern and Western European Coaches. I've tried and tested a variety of excellent training systems. The PAC contents are an amalgamation of all the best bits of the excellent philosophies that can help any individual with diet, nutrition, psychology, strength and speed - the whole gamut of what it takes to perform at your best.
Not only have I worked with the best coaches, I have been privileged to meet and discuss preparation with some of the best athletes that the world has ever seen.
Michael Johnson (I’ve included a bonus 15 minute interview with Michael for you - its free and it’s at the bottom of the page. In this interview you'll learn more about Michael's training philosophy and gain an insight into what took him to some of the greatest performances of all time. Will his world record in the 200m ever be broken? Don’t go there yet though as there is more that I want to share with you). I've had numerous conversations around training and performance with many sporting champions and some of the best athletes in the world. Here are some of the people that I have been privileged to share ideas with..
SAMPLE RECORDING Jonathon Edwards
(Olympic Champion, Current World record Holder - Triple Jump)
SAMPLE RECORDING Denise Lewis
(Olympic Gold - 2000 Heptathlon)
I have already added these interviews with these great athletes and coaches, and more will be added regularly.
These interviews have been recorded and are available for you as members to listen to at your own leisure.
My current lifestyle, in media, socially and as a sports enthusiast ensures that I regularly meet up with stars from a variety of sports.
As my passion is how to prepare for sport, I'll always be looking out for sports stars who might like to come and share some of their knowledge with you. In these interviews, like those short samples above, they have fascinating insights and training tips that you can take away and use.
I realised that there was a lot more that I wanted to share than just my weight training experiences, so I created video records of the movement drills I learned from the top coaches in the world of athletics.
Steve Backley
Agility Drills
In this chapter you’ll find the best drills I have ever learned over the past 15 years. I have put them into four sub-categories; ankles, knees, hips, and combination drills. This is mainly for ease of location as many of the knee-based drills, for example, have a huge requirement for the muscles around the ankle and hip to work hard and vice versa. These drills are fatiguing at first, but they are just so effective at enhancing your speed! You’ve got to try them.
Circuit Exercises
Circuit training is probably the best way to improve your fitness quickly. It is often a good way of disguising lots of work and can be organized to deliver all sorts of physical gains from endurance to strength to power and speed.
Example of circuit training exercise
Steve using Pac Bag
Here is a water-based resistance training system developed in Eastern Europe that you will not find in any gym in the world. Here's a photo of me training with the original bags.
The principle of the bag is to challenge the user by working with a variable and unpredictable resistance.
The best sports people make their chosen disciplines look easy. They can do this by moving well. Learning to move well is a fundamental part of any athletes development. I want to share with you the very best ways there are to develop this area of your preparation. By developing your fundamental movement skill, you will inoculate yourself against injury, have low cost and therefore be more efficient and be more stable under pressure.
Like everything in life, things move forward moves on and I wanted to create a place where athletes and sports people could come and exchange the latest developments and ideas so every athlete, whatever their chosen sport would be able to perform at their best.

Dr. Calvin Morriss worked for UK-Athletics from 1990-2002. During this time he progressed to the position of Head Strength & Conditioning Coach. Calvin oversaw the fitness programmers of many medal winning Olympic athletes, including Steve Backley. From 2002 to the present, Calvin has worked solely with international rugby players with a major emphasis on speed, strength and power development. He was a member of the conditioning team that propelled England to their World Cup Win in 2003. Calvin has a Ph.D. in Sports Biomechanics, and was educated at Manchester Metropolitan University.
After completing his degree Matt Lovell trained as a personal trainer with the YMCA. He worked for 5 years in the city for his company Excel Personal Training and is a grade 1 Master Personal Trainer. His work developed into a passion for nutrition which resulted in 3 years study at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition.
Matt was approached by the RFU to work full time in the lead up to the RWC win in 2003 and is still a valued member at the RFU. He oversees the nutritional programme for all Elite England Rugby Players
